the humble beginnings

the Eide family started their journey in agriculture on the undeveloped land of Luren since 1917, where they experimented with various crops and livestock but faced many challenges due to poor natural conditions for agriculture. The persistence and innovative spirit of Knut Johan Eide helped sustain the familythrough tough times, including his tenure in the military, which brought forth ideas to revolutionize their livelihood.

pioneering trout farming

in 1970, seizing the opportunity within their own parcel of land by Skogseidvatnet, Knut Johan Eide pioneered into fish farming, initially focusing on trout. This marked a significant shift from traditional farming to aquaculture, utilizing homemade tanks and exchanging knowledge with local aquaculture pioneers. This endeavor began to reshape their agricultural focus towards sustainable fish production.

advancing into Salmon Farming

building on their success with trout, the Eide family, led by Knut Frode in the mid-1980s, expanded into salmon farming. They moved operations from freshwater to the optimal conditions of the deep Hardangerfjorden, which offered ideal currents and clean water for salmon growth. This expansion not only solidified their reputation in the aquaculture industry but also ensured a sustainable future for the Eide family, intertwining their life's work with the rhythms of the sea.

as we refined our aquaculture practices, our focus shifted towards pioneering organic salmon farming, setting new benchmarks in quality and sustainability. We use certified organic feed with high levels of marine ingredients, ensuring our salmon receive nutritious, tasty, and easily digestible food. The fresh glacial and mountain waters flowing into our fjords, combined with our stringent protocols for net cleaning and maintenance, create an optimal environment for our salmon, mimicking their natural habitats as closely as possible.

in 2022 we unveiled the next step in our journey towards a sustainable future. located in the heart of the Hardanger Fjord, the salmon eye is built to inspire and inform the world on how to better feed the planet. Exhibition center and forum for responsible seafood in the daytime and boundary shifting restaurant Iris at night, Salmon Eye has caught the attention of the world in record time.

We are on a mission to set the standard for aquaculture where organic principles is our way of putting animal welfare first.
we are a family owned and run salmon farmer located on the west coast of Norway. Through three generations and with more than 50 years of experience we have been honing the craft of producing salmon and trout of the highest quality. Now lead by the 3rd generation Eide we are on a mission to set the standard for aquaculture putting animal welfare and responsible practices first.

what makes organic?

organic salmon is all about bringing you responsibly farmed fish with a focus on animal welfare and environmental care. It's our promise to you that we prioritize the health and happiness of our salmon just as much as we do the quality of the product you receive.

feed

we use feed consisting of higher levels of marine ingredients. All ingredients are certified organic. This ensures tasty and easily digestible food for our fish.

water

fresh water from the glaciers and mountains flow into the salt water fjord, creating  a unique environment for the fish. We follow strict protocols regarding cleaning and impregnating our nets, to ensure the most natural waterflow.

living conditions

large pens ensure plenty of room for the fish to roam freely. organic salmon is produced at a maximum of 10kg/m3, equaling 99% water to 1 % fish.

the Eide Family has been dedicated to the craft of producing salmon for over 50 years. Attention to detail, and an everlasting focus on biology has been center of our practice.
waste from fish farms can cause water pollution and excessive nutrient buildup, which can lead to decreased oxygen levels and harm marine life.

We combat this in two ways:
- By collecting waste, we ensure the longevity of our oceans and sustainable operations of our fish farms.

- by deploying IMTA we create micro ecosystems where nutrients from the farms is being utilized in producing blue mussels and kelp
eliminating copper from fish farming nets helps reduce the environmental footprint and minimizes the impact on aquatic life. Copper is toxic to some species and can disrupt the delicate ecosystem of the seas. Switching to safer, alternative materials for fish farm nets is essential for sustainable aquaculture practices.
